Estimate of energy loss from internal solitary waves breaking on slopes

چکیده
Abstract. Internal solitary waves (ISWs) emerge in the ocean and seas various forms break on shelf zones a variety of ways. This results intensive mixing that affects processes such as biological productivity sediment transport. As ISWs depression propagate two-layer ocean, from deep part onto shelf, two mechanisms are significant: (1) breaking internal over bottom topography when fluid velocities exceed wave phase speed causes overturning rear face wave, (2) changing polarity at turning point where depths upper lower layers equal. We assume parameters describe process interaction with an idealized shelf-slope nondimensional amplitude, normalized upper-layer thickness; ratio height layer to incident amplitude; (3) angle inclination. Based proposed three-dimensional classification diagram, four types propagation slopes distinguished: ISW propagates slope without breaking, changes breaks polarity, both slope. The energy loss during transformation angles was estimated using 85 numerical experiments. “Hot spots” high levels were highlighted for configuration mimics continental Lufeng region South China Sea.

Breaking criterion and characteristics for solitary waves on slopes
Shoaling and breaking of solitary waves is computed on slopes 1:100 to 1:8 using an experimentally validated fully nonlinear wave model based on potential flow equations. Characteristics of waves are computed at and beyond the breaking point, and geometric self-similarities of breakers are discussed as a function of wave height and bottom slope. No wave breaks for slopes steeper than 12 . A bre...
متن کاملIntrinsic Breaking of Internal Solitary Waves in a Deep Lake
Based on simulations with the Dubreil-Jacotin-Long (DJL) equation, the limiting amplitude and the breaking mechanisms of internal solitary waves of depression (ISWs) are predicted for different background stratifications. These theoretical predictions are compared to the amplitude and the stability of the leading internal solitary waves of more than 200 trains of ISWs observed in the centre of ...
متن کاملInternal waves and temperature fronts on slopes
Time series measurements from an array of temperature miniloggers in a line at constant depth along the sloping boundary of a lake are used to describe the `internal surf zone' where internal waves interact with the sloping boundary. More small positive temperature time derivatives are recorded than negative, but there are more large negative values than positive, giving the overall distributio...
متن کاملShoaling internal solitary waves
[1] The evolution and breaking of internal solitary waves in a shallow upper layer as they approach a constant bottom slope is examined through laboratory experiments. The waves are launched in a two-layer fluid through the standard lock-release method. In most experiments, the wave amplitude is significantly larger than the depth of the shallow upper layer so that they are not well described b...
متن کاملInternal Solitary Waves
The basic theory of internal solitary waves is reviewed, with the main emphasis on applications to the many observations of such waves in shallow coastal seas, fjords, lakes and in the atmospheric boundary layer. Commencing with the equations of motion for an inviscid, incompressible density-stratified fluid, we describe asymptotic reductions to model long-wave equations, including the well-kno...
